about

His latest release, “Give Up Your Salt,” finds Clancy indulging in his love for energetic electric guitar-driven indie rock in the vein of experimental bands such as Broken Social Scene, Wilco, and Nada Surf. The album was self-recorded at home and in friend’s studios and features Clancy playing the majority of instruments. Despite the solo artist billing, however, longtime musical collaborators give the songs on “Give Up Your Salt” the full band treatment with propulsive drumming from Jon Anderson, ethereal harmonies sung by Jennifer Murphy, multi-instrumentalist Joshua Loveland’s pedal steel, keyboards and one-man horn section, as well as Ryan Rebo’s fuzzed-out bass guitar, and distorted keyboards by Lenny Eckhardt. At the core of these ambitiously dense compositions is Clancy’s poetic observation of the human experience. These eight songs catalogue a wide range of emotions from the bewilderment at a friend’s coldness on “Sweetly,” to the narrator’s anger on “Race to the Middle”, to the pure delight in the transportive power of songs found on “Do You Feel.” The collection invites a second and third listen, best served loudly.

Clancy draws from a deep well of influences to compose songs that are honest and inviting in a style that is wholly his own. ... more
